Pelvic Floor Therapy

Do you - leak while coughing/laughing/sneezing/exercising? have anxiety when a bathroom isn’t nearby? have pain with intimacy?

If so, just know that -

  1. You’re not alone!

  2. Your pelvic floor likely needs some TLC

So what exactly is the pelvic floor?

A group of muscles and ligaments that attach to the bones of the pelvis. The structures form a sling, providing support for the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Similar to other areas of the body, muscles can become imbalanced with some too tense and others lacking tone.

Common Symptoms - pain with intercourse, painful periods, incontinence, frequent urination, chronic constipation, recurrent vaginal or urinary tract infections, pelvic organ prolapse

Common Causes - pelvic surgery, pregnancy, vaginal birth, overuse of pelvic muscles, chronic constipation, sexual trauma, stress/anxiety, aging

What should I expect from my first visit?

The 60-minute initial appointment includes a brief intake where you’ll be asked about your symptoms, followed by an evaluation for muscle tone, strength, and coordination. This is similar to a gynecologic exam, but doesn’t involve a speculum. Based on the findings, we’ll start with a brief treatment.

How do you treat pelvic floor dysfunction?

For trigger points (knots in muscles), gentle myofascial release techniques will be performed. For lack of tone or coordination, I’ll teach you proper Kegel technique. You’ll be sent home with an individualized treatment plan including at-home stretches and exercises.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies based on symptoms and your response, though most require 4-6 once weekly sessions.

What else is helpful to know?

Many women have experienced trauma that can make work of this nature sensitive. Because of this, I’m passionate about creating a cozy and safe environment. My goal is to provide a healing space to gently work on unraveling any emotions being held in the pelvic area. Depending on individual comfort level, I incorporate meditation, breath work, and holistic counseling to facilitate the process.
